Incheon International Airport, the World's Best

March 27, 2011

Incheon International Airport, opened in 2001, is the main gateway to Korea. It has been awarded as the World’s best international air hub since 2005 and has received a full 5-star rating from Skytrax. It is located 70 km (43 mi) west of Seoul, in another city, Incheon, where obviously the airport got its name. By bus, it takes roughly 2 hours from Seoul city center costing 10 bucks… but thanks to Airport Express (AREX) commuter trains that started operating recently, travel time is now only 56 minutes and costing only less than 5,000 Won (4 USD).

The airport has a golf course, spa, private sleeping rooms, ice skating rink, a casino, indoor gardens and a Museum of Korean Culture.

Personally though, arriving at this airport for the first time last year, I wasn’t at all very impressed. There was no “wow” effect. In fact, I would say, Beijing Capital international Airport is more impressive. What caught my attention however was
the relative convenience that this airport provides. I mean, considering its size, it is still quite easy to move and find your way around. There are plenty of restaurants, even fast food like Lotteria.

There are no free internet-wired PCs, unlike in Gimhae Airport of Busan. Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola phone users will have to come with their phones fully charged as charging stations only support Korean phones and I-Phone. I am not sure if there are sockets available for anyone to just plug their devices freely.

How to reach Seoul City Center:

You have three options: Subway, bus and taxi. Obviously, taxi is your last choice, unless you are ultra rich. By taxi, it costs around 60 ~ 100,000 Won. There are buses available in front of the arrival hall, which costs around 10,000 won. Subway (AREX Commuter Train) is your most practical choice. Not only would it cut travel time by half, it would also save you some won! If you take AREX, you should be getting off at Seoul Station, which is the train’s last stop. From there, finding your way around Seoul and its suburbs should be easy.

How to reach Incheon Int’l Ariport:

You have to go to Seoul Station, which is pretty much at the center of Seoul. From there, proceed to the AREX platform at the other end of the station. Commuter train leaves every 12 minutes.
