What Noynoy Aquino’s survey popularity represents

 April 30, 2010
It was a big disappointment when Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership almost immediately rallied behind Noynoy Aquino after Cory’s death last August. I was hoping they would fight the hype and they would encourage people to reject pedigree and popularity as the basis for electing leaders in the same way they were asking the public to resist candidates who use money as a tool to win a public office. I was wrong. They chose, without pre-condition, Noynoy Aquino despite the man’s lack of track record.

My friend from Korea asked me why Noynoy Aquino is enjoying a good chance of becoming the Philippines’ next president. What has he accomplished? He asked. What should be the right answer? Well, shame on us. The only reason why Noynoy became an instant president material was when his mom died. Something that, my friend proudly said, never happened and will never ever happen in Korea and Japan. Well that was coming from someone whose President was a former CEO of Hyundai before becoming mayor of the world’s number 2 metropolis and then head of state.

I have so many questions.

What happened to our collective judgment as a people?

I do not know why so many people, including those in the mainstream media, are giving Noynoy free pass on important issues, knowing how critical they are on the Arroyo moves.

How about asking, in good faith, Noynoy's legislative records? And on how he was called a LAWmaker for 12 years and yet did not pass a single law? On how it cannot be called corruption by itself? Too many good laws? Then why run for congress 4
times (3 times as Tarlac representative, once in the senate)?

How about Noynoy's instant anti-corruption advocacy? On how the people can trust him despite lack of previous anti-corruption initiatives? How then do we evaluate his integrity which is the number 1 reason people like him? He say he is a fighter of corruption. But why did he not fight it in the past?

How about Noynoy Aquino and what he is representing in Philippine politics? That without pedigree, without the surname, even someone like Gordon or whoever with a GREAT TRACK RECORD and VISION cannot be elected.

Or on how, you supposed to be intelligent civil society groups like Kaya Natin chose to rally behind Noynoy Aquino right after Cory's death when you were supposed to represent real change? You were advocating for alternative leaders prior to Cory's death. But you succumb to corrupt ideas, colonial mentality and immature politics simply because someone you view as nearly a Saint died.

MONEY and BLODDLINE should not be this country's definition of integrity and leadership.

Noynoy Aquino is representing the worst in Philippine politics, the very reason why it so hard to move this country forward at a pace similar to our
rapidly developing neighbors, like Malaysia. The daughter of a former president is being replaced by the son of another former president. We never learn. I bet in the next 6 years, people will still be lining up in the embassies, seeking to get overseas employment and even grabbing every opportunity to get another citizenship. That might include me and a couple of other idealistic young Pinoys. What a sad story.

They say, in a democracy, we deserve the kind of government and leaders we put in power. Noynoy Aquino might win... and it is to teach all of us a great lesson on political maturity. That INTEGRITY is not dependent on surnames or parents. That a LEADER should come out on his/her own merits... that if we want to move forward as a country, we should vote on merits not on memory, on policies not on personality. Unfortunately, 6 years is too long to waste, especially during this Asian Century. Vietnam, Malaysia, China and India are moving forward so fast that by 2016, before we know it, we're already too far behind.

I am thinking, if Noynoy wins, I will seek my future somewhere else and never look back until it’s 2016.

allow me to post this link in my FB account. thank you

then i suggest you start packing your things up since Noynoy will surely win this election. Then hope to see you come 2016 and i bet you'll have the greatest surprise of your life . . .

you're very judgemental or so i say pessimistic with all your opinions....
i may not know you personally but based on what u say ur just being biased to a single presidentiable..
i agree to some of what u have said but honestly, can ur own choice of president give u a better future???!!!!

@Anonymous no. 2: Yes, please do.

@Anonymous no.3: I have already packed. I am a backpacker. I am prepared to move anytime. ^^ And don't worry, I won'tbe surprised. Please get back to me in 2016... and tell me if I am wrong. I bet, Noynoy's promise of no corruption, no poverty will never ever come true, even in your wildest dreams. He did not do his job as a LAWmaker for 12 years... and now you expect him to deliver as a President for 6 years?

Anonymous no. 4: Yes they can because they DID deliver. Noynoy did not! Noynoy is corrupt. Being called a LAWmaker for 12 years and did not pass any single law is corruption by itself, worse than material corruption. It is what you call structural corruption.

Anonymous no. 1: Thank you. Unfortunately,so many people are blinded by the yellow ribbon. To untie that ribbon is difficult, knowing that the mainstream media are all behind it. HYPE over merits. Personality over policies. So we deserve the kind of country that we have. Shame on us! We don't have to wonder why countries like Japan, Korea and Malaysia grew so fast while we remain in poverty... because they never imagined themselves electing a leader simply because that leader's mom died recently. SHAME on US!!!!

Dahil sa survey, natatakpan ng yellow ribbon ang ating mga mata, at sa ating mga bunganga ay ang orange ribbon na di ma alis alis.

Goodness. If Noynoy wins this election, I will really migrate somewhere else and scrap my citizenship for the immense shame that I will feel.

Seriously, the Chinese parent of my sister's student asked her: "Why is it that an incompetent individual can aspire to be a President?" Isn't that a sign already of how idiotic our politics can get? :|

Anonymous no. 7: Exactly my point. If we go to China or Japan or korea or Malaysia where leaders have the vision and where they are put in power by merits, policies/specifics and track record, you will really feel ashamed! for in your country, you are electing Noynoy Aquino for the sole reason that his mom died recently... not on merits, not on track record, not on vision, not on specifics.

GENERAL SUGGESTION:

Please provide your name or nickname and a URL linking to your page like your facebook just to establish credibility. Thank you. ~~^^

agrees with your argument and congratulates you..nakakalungkot lang talaga na karamihan sa ating mga kababayan ay nadadala lang sa kasikatan nang kandidato at hindi ang track record..

excellent article. i weep for the future of this country...i have a feeling that those who ardently support Noynoy now will also be the one who will attack him viciously if ever he messes up. so that's my only consolation prize. then again, those who will vote for him have no right to complain whatsoever. incompetent voters deserve and incompetent leader like him.

seriously, why would anyone vote for someone who never did anything during his tenure? do you hire someone without any job experience? OF COURSE NOT! you get someone who has actually done something! and the only candidates who fit the bill are Gibo and Gordon.

ladies and gentlemen, i present you the REAL idiocracy.

hi, i believe without any doubt that Gordon is the only qualified leader for our country. He is selfless and loves his country as it deserves to be loved. I agree with what you wrote here since before, we were richer than Korea and Japan but now I feel that they are wiser. We are poor because of our lack of knowledge and principles. i will be very ashamed if Noynoy wins this election and I think so little of my friends or people i know who think that they are choosing the right candidate out of noynoy. I am also ready to get out of this country as soon as that person gets elected. Shame on this country if that happens. People are voting to bring this country into the pit.

you're right! ktakot pag si NOynoy ang manalo. walang alam.pano na future natin? oh, god another six years again? hype lang ksi yan after namatay si tita cory. di nga naririnig pangalan nya sa mga importanteng issues noon tos never heard sya nung Ondoy. Sino ang andun? Si Gordon lang at si Gibo di ba? Asan sila?

GO GIbo ang GOrdon!

ur afraid because he did nothing but u r never afraid of wat those other candidates did??

Noy Noy is Nothing !wala akong tiwala sa mga sinasabi nya ngaun nakaktakot nanaman yong nasa likod ng admin nya ngaun puro apoint nanaman!

it's called democracy. at least our kind of democracy. it's just sad that 60% of the votes had to be distributed among various candidates. if that set of non-Noynoy votes were for just one candidate, noynoy wouldn't have won.
